WELKOM – Members of the Park Road Tactical Response Team (TRT), arrested five suspects aged 22 to 40 for Illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, on Tuesday, 27 April 2021 at about 15:45 near the Riebeeckstad junction on the Odendaalsrus/Welkom Road.
The members followed up intelligence driven information and intercepted a Toyota Quantum mini bus at the junction. In the mini bus there were five men. The vehicle was then searched thoroughly and a pistol was discovered lying on the floor. The firearm and ammunition was seized and all five suspects were arrested.
The suspects were charged with illegal possession of firearm for further investigation and an additional charge was added under the Illegal Immigrants Act, as the men were found to be foreign nationals from Lesotho.
The case was transferred to Welkom Organized Crime and the suspects are expected to appear at the Welkom Magistrate Court on Thursday 29 April 2021.
“The removal of one illegal firearm from the hands of criminals, will safe many lives,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane.
