Lephalale: Four individuals have been apprehended for allegedly issuing driving licences fraudulently in Lephalale, Limpopo. The arrests were made by the anti-corruption wing of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in collaboration with the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations, commonly known as the Hawks.

According to South African Government News Agency, the arrests followed three significant operations at driving licence testing stations in Lephalale, Thabazimbi, and Bela-Bela, which led to the arrest of 23 suspects in February this year. Among those re-arrested was an examiner of licences, initially caught in February while fraudulently processing applications for two learner licence applicants who were not present in class.

The four suspects, including a current and a former examiner of driving licences and two driving school operators, appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and corruption. They were granted bail ranging from R3,000 to R8,000 and are scheduled to reappear in court on June 8, 2025. Investigations are ongoing to identify all applicants who benefited from the fraudulent activities at the three testing stations.

In a separate case, a Tshwane Metro Police official, Danny Malesela Mokoka, received a 36-month prison sentence or an R8,000 fine from the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. Mokoka entered a plea bargain, admitting to soliciting and accepting a R50 bribe in 2017.

RTMC CEO Advocate Makhosini Msibi expressed approval of the arrests and urged the public to report instances of fraud and corruption. Reports can be made anonymously via email to [email protected] or through a WhatsApp message to 083 293 7989.
