Gauteng Authorities Enhance Monitoring of Weather Impact on Roads

Pretoria:Gauteng: The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has intensified efforts to monitor the effects of ongoing severe weather on the province's road infrastructure. Continuous heavy rain since the beginning of the week has raised concerns about potential flooding in certain areas.

According to South African Government News Agency, MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has instructed the department and related entities to prioritize the safety of residents by closely observing the transport network. Response mechanisms have been activated to address incidents related to weather conditions, with teams directed to resolve infrastructure issues promptly.

Maintenance and response teams are on standby to handle flooding, road damage, drainage issues, and other weather-related hazards. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, reduce speed, increase following distances, and avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges.

Diale-Tlabela emphasized the importance of caution, urging motorists not to take unnecessary risks. Technical teams are ready to respond to any traffic signal malfunctions or infrastructure problems as conditions allow.

Efforts are also underway to assess and repair dysfunctional streetlights along provincial routes. Authorities are monitoring potential disruptions to Gautrain services due to the weather.

The MEC assured that public transport remains vital for the province's functioning, and steps are being taken to manage any weather-related disruptions. Commuters will receive timely updates and information as necessary.
