Gauteng government delivers houses in Devon

Devon’s resident, Clara Hlongwane’s wait for a home of her own has finally come to an end.

After receiving keys to her new house at the official handover at Impumelelo in Devon, Hlongwane said she had waited for a very long time to have a house to call a home.

“Finally, it is here. Getting this house means a bright future for me and my family. My children can now proudly say, ‘I have a home’.

“The government of Gauteng has delivered. It has taken us out of distress. The pain of living in a shack, not knowing where to run to during bad weather are now over. We are safe,” said the proud owner.

MEC for Human Settlements, Lebogang Maile said delivering houses to the people did not mean that people’s problems were over, but to show that government is determined in solving some of the problems that the communities were faced with.

“We will not only be giving you houses but also your title deeds so that you as owners can be in a position to make wills for your children. This is to help bring back the dignity of the black people.

“This is your house, you are not a tenant. You need to know that there are over a million people who do not have houses but that you were fortunate enough to get it. Please do not sell these houses, take care of them,” pleaded Maile.

Another house recipient, Ellen Jabulile Nyoni (63) said she was happy that she would die in her own house one day.

“The house is spacious and I can move around freely. Today, I am proud owner of a very beautiful house. We see flats in the suburbs or in town and today, I own one.

The provincial government is going to build 6936 houses in the area.
