Gauteng Law Enforcement Arrests Over 1,160 on New Year’s Eve

Johannesburg: Gauteng police, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, arrested more than 1,160 individuals on New Year's Eve for various criminal offenses, with approximately 900 being wanted suspects for serious and violent crimes. The arrests occurred during operations across all five districts-Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng, and West Rand.

According to South African Government News Agency, the integrated multidisciplinary operations led to the apprehension of over 1,160 individuals, including illegal immigrants, for crimes such as possession of unlicensed firearms, drunk driving, dealing in drugs, and possession of suspected stolen property. The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that detectives arrested around 900 suspects overnight during the tracing of wanted individuals for serious and violent offenses.

Inspections were also conducted at liquor outlets to ensure compliance with the Gauteng Liquor Act, as liquor is a factor in contact crimes like murder, rape, and assault. The police enforced a zero-tolerance approach to non-compliant liquor outlets, resulting in the closure of nine establishments. Several seizures were made during the operations, including dangerous weapons, drugs, liquor, firearms, and ammunition.

The operation also ensured a peaceful and jubilant crossover celebration in Hillbrow, known for recklessness and lawlessness during New Year's Eve celebrations. All arrested suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate's Courts starting Friday, 2 January.
