The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually on December 3. In line with this, Gauteng legislature (GPL) will convene a Sector Parliament for People with Disabilities, on Thursday, 6 December 2018 at the Munsieville Sports Centre, West Rand.

Also forming part of the current 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence campaign, the Sector Parliament is a platform for GPL to engage with organized formations that advocate the rights of People with Disabilities in Gauteng to discuss daily challenges facing this sector of society. The intention is to come up with recommendations for solutions to their problems.

The Sector Parliament will coincide with GPL’s current Voter Education campaign, which aims to encourage People with Disabilities to vote in the upcoming General Elections in 2019.

Topics to be discussed will include:

The 4th Industrial Revolution: will it enhance the ability of People with Disabilities to interact with the systems i.e. Banks, Government offices;

The importance of the participation of People with Disabilities in the electoral system � does it mainstream the sector?

Health care system: the NHI, are People with Disabilities given sufficient information on the proposed reforms?

The 2% employment quota � is it still relevant in the prevailing developmental country with the state of the economy?

The event further presents a platform to evaluate efforts made by government to empower People with disabilities, the employment quota, universal access to quality jobs and accessibility to knowledge. It also aims to highlight the role of civil society in advancing the rights of People with Disabilities.
