Hefty sentences handed down to killers

Hardworking Vryheid Task Team were rewarded with worthy results for serious crimes they were investigating around the province. After noticing the modus operandi of these crimes around the province, the detectives from Vryheid Task Team were tasked to collect all these dockets and they started their intensive investigation. These cases were from Emanguzi, KwaDukuza, Umhlali and Impendle areas. Through investigation, two suspects were traced and arrested for these crimes. They were convicted for a string of serious crimes they were facing in the Mtunzini High Court.

The trial started four weeks ago and yesterday two accused were found guilty on eleven counts which include farm attacks, murders, armed robberies, attempted murder, hijacking, attempted escaping from lawful custody, attempted robbery, assault on police officer, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Today, both accused appeared again in the Mtunzini High Court for sentencing. They were each sentenced to life imprisonment for murder plus a total of 95 years imprisonment for other crimes.

The first case was reported on 8 November 2016 where the suspects attacked an elderly victim at Zinkwazi area. The victim was assaulted, tied up and robbed of his items including a firearm from the house. A case of house robbery was opened at KwaDukuza police station.

The same suspects struck again at KwaDukuza area in the Chantilly Farm on 2 January 2017. They threatened the victim with firearms and a knife, robbed him of his items including cellphones, cash, laptop, keys and a vehicle. The victim’s guests who were with the victim were also robbed of their items. The suspects fled the scene. A case of house robbery was opened at KwaDukuza police station.

On 28 January 2017 at 21:30, the victim Mariupi Daysal (51) was at Maroupi wedding venue in Umhlali when he was approached by the suspects who shot and killed him. The suspects fled the scene with victim’s valuables. A case of murder and robbery was opened at Umhlali police station.

The accused Aron ‘Poliane’ Feijao Moiane (26) and Jaulane Feijao Moiane (35) were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years imprisonment each for six counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years’ imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearms. The second accused was also sentenced to five years imprisonment for each count of assault on police, attempted escaping from lawful custody and attempted robbery. He was sentenced for only five counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and acquitted on the sixth one.
