Pretoria:The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Local Government Elections has expressed confidence in the preparations for the upcoming elections scheduled for November 2026.
According to South African Government News Agency, Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs convened a fortnightly IMC meeting to review the ongoing preparations and plans. The IMC stressed the importance of intensified collaboration among government departments, stakeholders, role-players, and communities to ensure free and fair elections.
The committee highlighted the need to bridge the trust gap between the government and communities by increasing public education and voter engagement. They underscored the critical role of public confidence in the electoral process and government institutions.
The IMC also addressed South Africa's challenges with gender-based violence and mass shootings, reaffirming the government's commitment to justice and community protection. Additionally, the meeting focused on the effects of El Ni±o on election operations, emphasizing the need for vigilance and preparedness against weather-related risks that could impact logistical arrangements and voter participation.
The IMC received a report from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) on the Seasonal Weather Outlook, which indicated an increased likelihood of below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures. This could affect water availability, agriculture, and public health. The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) is working to translate weather forecasts into practical actions for voting operations.
The Electoral Commission provided updates on election preparations, highlighting a goal for 100% voter turnout. Legal challenges with implications for ballot finalization were noted, and the commission is proceeding with ballot paper printing. A total of 142,072 candidates have been nominated for council seats, with 38% being women. Special vote applications are open until 12 October 2026, with voting scheduled for 2-3 November.
The IMC reported that most election materials are ready, with local storage facilities secured. Seventy-two organizations have applied to become election observers, and security preparations are underway to ensure safe and secure elections. The Department of Home Affairs is coordinating with the Electoral Commission to assist potential voters with necessary documentation.
Minister Hlabisa concluded the meeting by emphasizing the importance of collective efforts among government, electoral stakeholders, and citizens to ensure the success of the elections.
