Police recovered more than 100 firearms in possession of former security companies

POLOKWANE – Crimes perpetrated through the use of firearms have become prevalent in the province and this prompted the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba to dispatch the Flash Unit to conduct an operation and trace down all security companies that have closed down where their former members were still in possession of company firearms. These firearms then end up being used in the commission of robberies and other serious crimes.

During this operation that was conducted in Thohoyandou Cluster, 34 security companies were visited and 152 fire arms and 93 various assorted rounds of ammunition were recovered. The recovered firearms and ammunition will be destroyed after proper procedures are completed.

The Provincial Commissioner cautioned the Security companies who are not compliant with the Fire Arms Control Act that similar actions will be taken against their companies.

Anyone with information about these companies is requested to contact Lieutenant Colonel Justice Nchabeleng at 082 468 3848 or any FLASH coordinator at the nearest Police Station across the Province or the Crime Stop at 0860010111.
