Pretoria: President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the deepening of democracy and advancement of human rights for all. The President noted that as South Africa prepares to commemorate Freedom Day next Monday, the country remains "grounded in a culture of human rights, the rule of law and the expression of people's will through regular elections" as set out in the Constitution.

According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa, in his weekly newsletter, emphasized the importance of South Africa's role in promoting constitutional values internationally. He highlighted the country's participation in the 4th meeting of the 'In Defence of Democracy' initiative held in Barcelona, Spain, asserting South Africa's position among the democratic governments of the world. During the gathering, President Ramaphosa stressed the need for the United Nations to reassert itself in global affairs and called for the reform of institutions of global governance to ensure representation of all countries and peoples.

President Ramaphosa expressed concern over threats to democracy worldwide, citing "narrow nationalism, prejudice and intolerance" as significant challenges. He also pointed out that inequality within and among nations poses a serious threat to democratic principles. To address these issues, he advocated for the creation of an International Panel on Inequality, which would analyze alternative policies to inform governments and policymakers. This initiative stems from recommendations in a global inequality report commissioned by South Africa during its G20 Presidency.

President Ramaphosa reiterated that the 'In Defence of Democracy' initiative aligns with South Africa's foreign policy, which is committed to supporting democratic values. He noted that the erosion of democracy in other parts of the world impacts South Africa's economy and society, emphasizing the importance of defending democracy both domestically and internationally. As Freedom Day approaches, he urged South Africans to unite against challenges like poverty and inequality that threaten democratic achievements.
