South Africa Voices Concern Over Attacks in the Red Sea Region

Accra:The government of South Africa has raised serious concerns over the escalation of attacks in the Red Sea region, particularly around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, amid ongoing conflict in Yemen. These attacks, including those targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, have heightened tensions in the area.

According to South African Government News Agency, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) expressed worry about actions that threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia and neighboring states. The government condemned attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, conveying condolences for the casualties and injuries resulting from these incidents.

South Africa has called for all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilize the region. The government emphasized the need for an inclusive political process to resolve the conflict in Yemen, advocating for negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations.

The government also highlighted the importance of safeguarding international shipping routes and ensuring the safety of seafarers in the Red Sea and the straits of Bab el-Mandeb and Hormuz. Protection of navigational rights and freedom of vessels is crucial, as stipulated by international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Concerns were also expressed over attacks on places of worship and religious sites, notably those in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Such sites hold significant importance for Muslims globally and must be protected under international humanitarian law.

DIRCO Minister Ronald Lamola reiterated South Africa's commitment to conflict resolution through dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law, stressing that peace in Yemen and stability in the Red Sea region are vital for regional prosperity and international trade. The government has renewed its call for diplomacy and constructive engagement to support a peaceful and lasting resolution to the conflict.
