Vedanta Zinc Mine Expansion Boosts South Africa’s Zinc Industry

Aggeneys:Northern Cape The Northern Cape's Vedanta Zinc Mine has marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Vedanta Gamsberg Phase II Concentrator Plant. This investment is expected to sustain up to 1,000 jobs and enhance South Africa's position in the global zinc industry.

According to South African Government News Agency, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially inaugurated the expansion in Aggeneys, which will double the mine's annual ore capacity from approximately four million to eight million tonnes. The plant will also increase its annual zinc-in-concentrate production to around 500,000 tonnes. Addressing the event, President Ramaphosa highlighted the importance of turning investment commitments into economic activity, employment, and productive assets.

The investment of approximately R21 billion by Vedanta Zinc International, made at the first South Africa Investment Conference in 2018, underscores confidence in the country's economic potential. Despite challenges such as weak economic growth and high unemployment, the government has undertaken reforms to improve electricity supply and stabilize public finances.

President Ramaphosa noted that the administration has committed around R1 trillion to infrastructure development, including investment in electricity, railways, ports, and water systems. The goal is to create productive capacity and generate employment, with a target of mobilizing R3 trillion in investment over five years.

The Gamsberg Phase II expansion employed over 1,500 people during construction and is expected to sustain between 800 and 1,000 jobs during operations. The President emphasized the need for mining investments to foster skills development and local enterprise growth, calling for greater participation by young people, particularly women, in the mining industry.

Vedanta's social investment initiatives, such as supporting early childhood development and education, were also welcomed. The establishment of the JF Boeboe Van Wyk Oncology Centre in Springbok, providing specialized cancer care, was highlighted as a significant contribution to the community.

President Ramaphosa stated that the expansion reflects the strong relationship between South Africa and India, inviting further investment from Indian and international companies. He reiterated the government's commitment to fostering a competitive environment for enterprise and underscored the importance of cooperation between government, business, and communities in achieving economic progress.
