Taxi hit-men nabbed with high calibre firearms following the killing of two men

DURBAN – Following a shooting at Utrecht yesterday where two men were killed, a multi-disciplinary operation which comprised of police officers from the Tactical Response Team, K9 Unit, local farmers, security companies and police officers from neighbouring police stations followed up information regarding the suspects involved and blocked all the routes.
The vehicle was spotted travelling between Dundee and Nquthu. Upon approaching the suspect’s vehicle there was a shoot-out. The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled into the bushes whilst shooting at police. The bush was surrounded by the team to make sure that there are no escape routes. Three suspects aged between 27 and 47 were arrested by the team whilst the fourth suspect managed to evade police arrest. Three AK47 rifles with 84 rounds of ammunition were found in suspect’s possession.
The arrested suspects will also be profiled and to ascertain their involvement in other taxi related cases reported in the province and in Gauteng. The suspects are expected to appear before the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, murder and attempted murder.
It is alleged that yesterday at 13:30 at Voor Street, three men were seated inside a vehicle when they were shot by unknown suspects who were travelling in a vehicle. Two men believed to be between 30 and 40-years-old were declared dead at the scene while the third one was taken to hospital for medical attention. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised everyone involved in tracing and apprehending the notorious hit-men. “This is the evidence of partnership with other law enforcement agencies and local farmers in the fight against crime in the province. I am confident that the remaining suspect will be arrested soon and also face the music,” he said.
