Turkish Fugitive Arrested in KwaZulu-Natal

Isipingo:A Turkish fugitive accused of multiple serious crimes, including rape and kidnapping, has been apprehended in Isipingo, KwaZulu-Natal, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS). According to South African Government News Agency, the 40-year-old suspect was captured by INTERPOL South Africa's Fugitive Investigation Team during a coordinated operation on Thursday. The fugitive is sought by Turkish authorities for charges including rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, malicious damage to property, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. These charges were reported to the Eskisehir Police Department in Turkey. The SAPS reported that information from Turkish authorities revealed the suspect allegedly kidnapped his then-fiancée in 2010 and subjected her to repeated rape over several days. He also reportedly assaulted her by repeatedly hitting her head against a wall, causing permanent physical and psychological harm. The victim was 22 years old at the time of the alleged crimes. A fter the investigation concluded, the suspect fled Turkey and was eventually located in Isipingo. INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Pretoria received an extradition request from Turkish authorities and executed a warrant, leading to the fugitive's arrest. The suspect appeared in the Umlazi Magistrates' Court on Friday in connection with an extradition application by the Turkish government. The SAPS emphasized their ongoing commitment to international law enforcement cooperation through INTERPOL, facilitating the capture of individuals attempting to escape justice by crossing international borders. This arrest follows a similar operation by INTERPOL South Africa last month, where another Turkish fugitive, a former primary school principal, was arrested in Cape Town on charges of sexual assault, kidnapping, and intimidation involving a nine-year-old victim. The former principal was apprehended on September 21, 2026, and has appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates' Court.
