Mossel Bay:A maritime incident off the coast of Mossel Bay has led to the recovery of three bodies, while two other crew members remain missing. The incident involved the uMkhuseli Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV), operated by AMSOL on behalf of the Department of Transport.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Department of Transport reported that the tragedy occurred approximately 40 nautical miles off Mossel Bay during severe weather conditions. A crew member was pulled overboard while handling a mooring line, triggering a search and rescue operation.
A fast rescue boat dispatched to assist capsized in the rough seas with four crew members on board. Three bodies have been recovered so far, and the search was temporarily halted overnight due to worsening conditions before resuming the next morning for the two missing crew members.
The Department of Transport, along with Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa, expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and the maritime industry. They also praised the efforts of vessels and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteers who responded to the distress call. A helicopter was dispatched from Cape Town to aid in the rescue operation.
A preliminary investigation into the incident will be conducted by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), while AMSA is providing support to the families and affected crew members. The department emphasized the importance of seafarer safety and will continue to ensure compliance with safety measures in maritime operations.
