WESTERN CAPE – Kraaifontein SAPS welcomed the 20 and 23 years sentences that was handed to a 27 and 20 year old suspects for separate incidents on Monday and Tuesday this week, in the Blue Downs Regional Court for rape.
Luwando Wagraya (27) was convicted of the rape a 20 year old female on 21 May, 2011. The victim was walking with a friend at around 21:00 in Maroelra Street, Wallacedene, Kraaifontein when three males approached them and attempted to rob them. They forced the victim into the nearby bushes, her friend got away unharmed. The victim was raped by all three men. All three suspects were traced, arrested and made their first appearance on 26 July 2011. They were initially denied bailm, but were later released on bail by the courts. The three suspects failed to appear before court at their next court appearance with warrants of arrests issued. Wagraya was rearrested during 2017 and have been in custody since then. Wagraya was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on Monday, 26 August 2019 in the Blue Downs Regional Court.
One of the original three suspects has since passed away with the other one still on the run. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of third suspect are encouraged to contact Warrant Officer Pedro Isaacs of Kraaifontein FCS on 021 980 5500 or 082 522 1045.
In a separate case, a 24-year-old male was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl at her home in Charles Street, Bloekombos, Kraaifontein on 23 November 2017 when he broke into their house, threatened her with a knife and raped her. The convicted rapist cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim. The suspect was pointed out by the victim, arrested and made his first appearance at Blue Downs Regional Court on 29 November 2017. The state successfully opposed bail and the rapist has been in custody for the duration of the court proceedings. The rapist was convicted and sentenced to effective 23 years imprisonment on Tuesday, 27 August 2019 in the Blue Downs Regional Court.
Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Sindile Mfazi, thanked the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Pedro Isaacs of Kraaifontein FCS for his sterling work in the conviction of two rapists within two days. He also thanked the victims for their bravery in reporting these heinous crimes to the police and pointing out the suspects.
